Top resources to master French grammar online

  • Romane Chiarappa

When learning a new language, you have two options :

  • either grammar feels like the most dreadful thing ever,

  • either you're fond of it and can't stop practicing.

In both cases, you will need resources and exercises to dive in and since textbooks aren't part of our lives anymore, online is the place to be!

Here are my 4 personal favorites as a French teacher :

Master French conjugation online

This website offers short and mainly gap-filling exercises.

They are very very efficient to revise a specific tense or just test yourself!

As a French native, it's one of my references to check some conjugations whenever I have a doubt because, yes, natives also need grammar support. French grammar mistakes are not just for foreign learners.

Interactive French grammar tools

TV5 Monde and RFI (Radio France International) are both public information services that offer a wide range of interactive French grammar tools, for French teachers, and French learners.

TV5 Monde has different areas on its website such as "learn", "play" and "discover French language" but what really matters for us here is their grammar section. It offers more than a hundred grammar sheets of all levels acting as reference memos when you're unsure about something. They have similar sections for vocabulary and pronunciation.

In its revision section, RFI is more active in its approach since it makes you practice a grammar point while listening to an extract of their French news. It also provides you with a memo sheet just so summarize the information. It's a very active way to review French grammar.

French grammar exercises

If you're looking for typical grammar exercises, I invite you to browse Franรงais Facile. The web design is quite dated, but oh my! the amount of exercises you can find there is pretty much insane. Whatever it is that you need to practice, you'll find what you need.

BEST tip to master French grammar

As a native French teacher, but more specifically, as a polyglot, I'll confide this : grammar is very important, yes, you need to understand and practice concepts to master them, and repeating exercises is a good way to make yourself comfortable.

However, no matter the language, grammar is a tool. A tool is made to be used.

Practicing grammar is not only about filling up exercise sheets, it's about practicing the language, and if you can't talk to someone, your best option is to write in French as often as possible.

Keeping a journal in French with daily entrances is probably the best tip I can offer .
